Whats the best way to weld an extension to a vertical column?

Question by Kyle: Whats the ideal way to weld an extension to a vertical column?
I have a steel 4" square vertical column that requirements to have a 3ft extension added to it. Would the greatest way to be insert a smaller square piece 18" into the existing and 18" into the extension, then plug weld at every single finish then butt weld the two outer pieces? Any flaws in this?

Sounds like a winner to me Kyle. Personally I would separate the two columns about 1/16" and let my root weld catch the inner column. In any case, the extension really should be kept in alignment with the rest of the column. Another way would be to clamp two pieces of small angle iron to opposite corners of the column just before welding to maintain good alignment. The inner column isnt necessary for assistance with a good weld.
